CWS Window Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

We install CWS windows in Ventura every week, and most replacements run between $850 and $1,400 per opening, fully installed with the old unit removed, the opening re-flashed, and the interior trim put back clean. If you have a CWS window that’s fogged, binding, or leaking air, we can usually match it to an existing or compatible CWS series and schedule the work within a few days. The way people usually discover the problem is the room starts feeling hotter in August, the glass fogs between the panes in winter, or the crank on a casement suddenly spins without moving the sash.

Call (559) 257-2350

A word of honesty up front: Lightwell Windows Ventura is an independent installer, not a CWS corporate service arm. That actually works in your favor, because we carry CWS-compatible product and aftermarket components, and we’re not locked into a single supplier’s lead time. We also service PGT, CGI, and ES Windows installs, so if you have a mixed house, one call covers it.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS has made several series over the years, and the name on the label matters. We regularly work with CWS 700 Series and 900 Series products, plus their earlier Builder line that still shows up in Ventura homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. The 900 Series is the high-performance line intended for coastal exposure, which makes it common from the Ventura Pier neighborhoods up into the hills. The label is the key: on the frame edge or head jamb you’ll find a small etched or printed plate with the series number, glass package code, and sometimes the original fabrication date.

One compatibility gotcha we see often: CWS changed its frame dimensions between the Builder line and the 700/900 Series by roughly a quarter inch in the jamb depth. A 700 Series sash won’t drop into a Builder frame without a trim or shim package that, honestly, usually isn’t worth the labor. We’ll pull the old sash, measure the frame throat and bead profile, and tell you straight whether we’re replacing the sash only or the full frame. OEM CWS parts are available for most current series, but for older units a quality aftermarket insulated glass unit is often the better value. The aluminum extrusion itself rarely fails. It’s the glass seal, the balance shoe, or the crank gearing that goes first.

Keith Yamada will tell you the salt air near the coast is the quiet killer. It isn’t dramatic, it just works at the roller tracks, pivot pins, and any exposed steel screw for a decade until the window stops moving the way it should.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

  • Fog or moisture between the glass panes. The perimeter seal on the insulated glass unit has failed, letting humid air in. Once you can wipe the inside of the glass and the fog stays on the outside, the airtight seal is gone and the unit’s insulating value has dropped sharply.
  • A casement crank that spins freely for the first turn. The gear teeth in the operator are bridged or stripped, usually from years of salt exposure or forcing a window that’s bound in its track. The handle isn’t the problem; the operator hub behind it is.
  • Daylight visible at the frame corner when the sash is closed. The weatherstripping has compressed or the sash has drifted out of square. In Ventura’s marine air, that small gap isn’t just an air leak, it’s the reason you’ll find fine salt dust built up on the inside sill after a string of onshore winds.
  • The window drops a few inches when you lift it and won’t stay open. The balance shoes or spiral balances have lost tension. On CWS single hungs this is common after eight to twelve years, faster near the coast.
  • Water staining on the interior drywall below a window. The exterior flashing or sill pan is failing, not the window itself. We address the opening, not just the sash.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full CWS window installation in Ventura, expect $850 to $1,400 per opening for a standard-size replacement. A sash-only swap, where the frame is still sound, runs $300 to $550 per unit including the new insulated glass and hardware. Larger picture windows or second-story work push the upper end; a simple single-hung in a stucco wall sits at the middle.

Every quote is written before we touch anything, and it includes removing the old unit, disposal, new flashing tape and sill pan, shims, interior trim, the window itself, and a photo of the cleaned-up site before we leave. No change orders, no surprise line at the end. Our workmanship warranty follows the job for a full year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the finished result isn’t right, we come back and make it right. That’s the whole promise.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a couple of things worth checking before you call, so you can describe the problem accurately. Note the series label we mentioned, see if the sash moves evenly or hangs on one side, and check whether the fog is inside the glass or just on the surface. All of that is safe to do with a flashlight.

What we’d steer you away from is pulling the sash yourself on a CWS casement or awning. Those hinges are under tension when the window is open, and a slip has taken more than one fingertip off. Let a trained installer work the hinges and the glazing bead. We carry the common balance shoes, operators, and weatherstripping for CWS units on the truck, so in most cases the first trip is also the fixing trip. Call (559) 257-2350 and we’ll put it on the schedule.
